Why Car Seats Shouldnt Be Bought Used

By: Lauren Dzuris

If you didnt know already, car seats should never be bought used. If you have a professional install your car seat (someone like a police officer or a firefighter), they wont even install it for you. They will have you throw it away and ask you to avoid using it for your child. So, why is it so dangerous to give your child a used car seat? Continue reading below to find out some of the top reasons!

Unknown History

A used car seat has an unclear history that you are also purchasing. It is recommended that a car seat should not be reused following a vehicle accident or similar incident. If a car seat is used it is impossible to detect whether or not the seat has been involved in an accident or may have sustained other damages. Damage sustained in an accident may not be visible to the naked eye and can be missed even upon close inspection. A used car seat should not be purchased because you cannot guarantee its ability to keep your baby safe.

Recall Status

A used car seat may be involved in a recall and without knowing proper model numbers and access to the Internet you may be purchasing a car seat that is a safety hazard. While models can be checked via the Internet to check on recall and safety status it is unlikely you will be able to do so prior to making the purchase. If you do purchase a used car seat and it turns out to be recalled you will not be eligible to return the item as you did not purchase it from an authorized dealer.

Missing or Damaged Accessories

Used car seats typically do not come complete with every accessory included at purchase. Instruction manuals can usually be downloaded from the manufacturers website and replacement buckles or straps can also be purchased but this comes at a heavy price. Additionally, the used car seat may be missing items you do not realize you need until it is too late. Replacing these items can sometimes take up to six weeks from the time they are ordered, possibly rendering the seat unusable.

Comfort

Generally, used car seats are older models sold due to a child outgrowing them, meaning they are normally several years old. As with all used items this means there will be a fair amount of wear and tear on the padding and cloth of the seat portions. While this usually does not pose a safety risk it can irritate an infants tender skin.

As you can see, there are a few different reasons you dont want to buy a car seat used. Its against the law, is dangerous, and will be a big waste of money in the long run. Why not spend the extra $10 or $20 on a brand new one and guarantee that your child will be safe instead? Make the smart decision and go against buying a used car seat, and buy a new one.
